Progress billing (also called stage payments) is when you invoice at agreed milestones throughout a construction project rather than one lump sum at the end. Common stages include foundations, walls, roof, first fix, second fix and completion.
Retention is a percentage (typically 5%) held back from each payment as security against defects. Half is usually released at practical completion and the remainder after the defects liability period (typically 12 months).
